Kenya is one of the best safari destinations in Africa visiting by thousands of tourists every years hoping to catch a glimpse of the wildebeests in their annual migration route in Masai Mara Game reserve or flocks of pink flamingos on Lake Nakuru that always feature in many televisions documentaries.
Within a country that is marketed as a magical safari destination, you’ll find an endless list of safari operators online or meet several agents at the airport in Nairobi touting their amazing holiday offers and packages to any ‘Mzungu’ white or traveler they can catch there. The scenery is not any different at the airport in Mombasa!
But before you choose the package to take, ask yourself, are all these offers genuine? Many Tour operators offer reliable service but we can dispute the fact there are a few who are dubious and will cheat you out rightly! Tourist have often complained of poor service delivery, poor meals, inappropriate accommodation and tour guides that disappear in the middle of their trip leaving tourists stranded in no where!
Bad Budget travel agents
While many tourists rush for making reservations for the cheapest packages they come across, watch out for bad budget tour operators in Mombasa and Nairobi. Quite often, cheaper things come at a high price and so are these Kenya tour & safari packages.
There are increasing costs of hotel accommodation, fuel and park entrance fees are also constantly changed to meet the terms set by the Kenya Wildlife Service. To offset such challenges, Bad budget companies will provide vehicles in poor conditions and take tourists to parks without paying entrance fees which is illegal and gets you in trouble. Some bad budget companies are just brokers for bigger safari tour operators and thus do not have their own equipment such as tourist vans, cars and tour guides. They normally wait to have enough booked tourist to have such equipment available. In case they do not provide the service and equipment when you need them thus many lose day tours waiting for emergency service…do not except a refund! While agents/brokers are not as bad, you can not guarantee their level of service delivery like you do for reputable tour operators.
Nevertheless, there are also short comings on service delivery for the good travel agents as well. Some tour operators, although recommended as good may be disappointing for some services while bad companies may out shrine in that field-the difference comes in compensations that good companies make for any short falls.
On spot Arrangements
It is always good to make arrangements and bookings in advance for any tour or safari in Africa. Unless you are working with the best safari companies in Kenya, you’ll always need to make confirmation on your Kenya safari tours and hotels on spot. There are several tour operators and agents running travel websites and can make bookings online. At the same time, you must confirm Kenya safaris by visiting the company offices and if possible talk to their staff or inquire about the company’s reputation and ask around for the credibility of your travel agent.
On-spot booking has advantages of flexibility and a wide range of options to consider when it comes to booking services like hotel accommodation, car rentals and air tickets. You have the chance to interact with your tour guide and critically look at your safari itinerary before you make payments. Remember to be friendly and polite while stressing your interests while making a safari tour plan. Don’t make all your payment at once…keep at least 30% to be paid on proper service delivery!
How to get the best tour operator
With so much to consider, one is left confused on how to get the best tour operator and agent. Critically look at the packages for choosing one. Budget Kenya safari packages have rates for outdoor camping or a tented camp with basic tourist facilities normally priced between USD 80 and USD 100 per night and USD 500 for a couple on a 4 day safari any where. Compare the prices provided by different companies and make a conclusive plan to go for.
