Lake Mburo National Park Safari information

Lake Mburo National Park is the national park closest to Uganda’s capital Kampala and is located near Lake Mburo along Mbarara road. 20%of the park’s populace is covered by the Lake Mburo and the adjacent wetlands of the 260 kilometers. And this has greatly made the park an ideal haven for bird life with about 310 recorded bird species. Lake Mburo National Park is the only locality where one can find the impalas and the eland which is the largest antelope in Africa. Other animals include large groups of buffaloes, zebras, and lions although they are extinct in this region of the African continent. Elephants and giraffes are not residents in this park.




Birding devotees will pleasure in the treks in the Rubanga Forest in which more than 40bird species have been recorded. Lake Mburo National Park has a rich diversity of flora and fauna and these can best be seen by a boat ride/cruise. Among them are crocodiles, hippos and birds such as the Peliccans, herons, fish eagles, black cranes and cormorants which are quite plentiful to give you a wonderful birding experience.
Basing on the arrangement done with the management of the park, the duration of the boat rides usually vary. Lake Mburo is additionally a wonderful fishing area and Tilapia is the commonest fish caught in thus park although other species such as mud fish and lung fish can be caught.

How to get to Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is located in the western part of Uganda between Masaka town and Mabarara. The Kampala- Mbarara highway borders the park in the north, and it is approximately 230 kilometer s from Kampala to the headquarters of the park taking close to a 4 hours drive. There is a signpost at 211 kilometers from Kampala of the park pointing to a left turn that will lead you to entrance of the park via the Nshara Gate. From Mbarara is just 47 kilometers to the head quarters of the park. At Sanag you will find the right turn to the park and the Rweshsbeshebe Park Gate is a mere 12 kilometers from Sanga. It is advisable to take a 4-Wheel Drive particularly in the wet season to arrive at Sanga gate. Public transportation to the park will require use of a small bus from Kampala or the town of Mbarara at Sanga. Transport leading to the main gate is quite limited so it may require that you wait for some time.

Accommodation

Within the park at Rwonyo, there is available accommodation with banda’s present for double or sole occupancy. The restaurant offers standard meals. Hurricane lamps together with warm water bathing buckets are offered. Beers and various sodas are available although their stock will depend on the number of visitors in the park at the time.
Camping is probable within and surrounding the bansa’s although persons with their primate vehicles usually prefer camping at the nearby education center. Additionally are three campsites off the lakeside-trail. These are not commonly used at at night fall are overwhelmed by mosquitoes and other insects, ad camping there wil require that you are entirely self-contained. Bore holes are the only available water sources in Rwonyo , and jerricans are provided for those using other camp sites. Remember to treat or boil this water if you are going to drink it.




Mihigo Lodges

These where established at the park’s border and launched in January 2007. These are a high-class tented camp that was constructed on a rock projection with stunning views extending over 360. At the lodge is a fresh water swimming pool to help you cool at the end of a day’s adventure. The lodge can be reached via the Nshara gate when traveling from Kampala to Lake Mburo, after a sharp left turn of 2 kilometers to the Ruroko track.




Take this track and follow the signposts to Mihigo Lodge. After a 6 km drive, you will get to the valley with open grasslands, and somewhat to the right are the Mihigo Lodges located atop of a big rock formation. You will proceed following the signposts to Mihigo Lodges.

Lake Mburo Tented Camp

The lodges are at Lake Mburo National Park’s hill-top with an overlook of Lake Mburo. The diverse landscape of the park comprised of dry hillsides, rocky projections, swamps, wood savannas, bush thickest, open savanna and lakes all give the visitors a wonderful plant form to view the rich flora and fauna of the area. The lodges offer personalized services, well stocked bars and air-conditioned tents all for the guest to unwind in. additionally are a variety of bird species within the locality of the lodges.
The camp has 9 tents for guests which are all luxuriously set up. The placement of the bar & restaurant is so ideal to give you an outstanding view of the stunning Lake Mburo. The high-quality personalized services make the park a more pleasant place to be with services such as a boat trip on the lake Mburo, guided trekking safaris and game drive.

Location of Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is the only National Park in Uganda with a whole lake in it. It has raising and falling hills together with open grass valleys and other 4 smaller lakes, the land regions are characterized by open and wood acacia savanna, with the park’s total populace spreading to 256 sq. kilometer.
Best time to Visit Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is located in the rain-shadows between the Rwenzori Mountains and Lake Victoria, receiving averagely 800mm of rainfall annually. Wildlife

Most of the land mass of the park is covered with savanna dotted with acacia trees. This park has the largest diversity of floar and fauna of all parks in Uganda. it is a haven to the un common imapalsa, Topi, Klipspringer and eland.  Additionally, buffalos and Burchells Zebras are found there. Hippos are commonly sees on the shores of the shores of the lake and these you will see fronm the different platforms along the shores of the lake.
Birdlife

Most of lake Mburo is neighbored with cyperus papyrus, and these are a sanctuary to Papyrus Gonolek. This bird can only be seen while on a boat cruise. Among the 357 types of birds recorded in this park, are aquatic birds, acacia birds and savanna birds such as the crested crane, marabou stork, bronze tailed starling, shoebill, bee eaters and other foreign birds such as Go-Away Bird, Swamp Flycatchers, Blue Naped Coucal  and the Nubian Woodpecker.
The Pennant-winged Nightjaris commonly seen during the period when they are migrating very early in the morning at the Education Center Campsite.

Other attractions

Walking safaris are a common way of exploring the stunning Lake Mburo an quite an exhilarating alternative for those who don’t have private vehicles. The advantage of having arranger along the safari will add meaning to your expedition and also for security reasons as there are many buffaloes in the park which are a threat for those trekking alone. Hyenas are usually seen early in the morning whereas the popularly seen antelopes and hippos can be sighted at.
The Kazuma Hill
The Kazuma Hill offers the best competitive point to view the grassy valleys and the rolling hills together with the 14 lake that comprise the surrounding region to the park.
Lake Mburo
It is also advised that you take the 2 hours motor boat trip on Lake Mburo which can be organized through the office of the warden.
