Importance of agriculture:

Agriculture has a number of roles it plays in our lives. It is the basis to avail food to humanity and animals thus sustaining our lives. Chances of surviving agriculture would be very counted if we did not have agriculture because both man and animals would definitely die of starvation.  Because of this, many people, researchers and policy makers have picked interest in agriculture because of its great significance to humanity.

Food:

For any country on this planet seeking to be entirely independent, they should be able to provide sufficient food for their citizens. And it only through engaging in the different agricultural practices that countries can meet the food demands of their people. By practicing crop and animal husbandry, countries will be able to acquire all necessities to feed their people. For that reason therefore, agriculture has provided all the necessary food supplements to nourish our bodies and keep us disease free.

Additionally agriculture is a reliable source of energy, for instance trees and other plants are cut for firewood. Also Bio-fuels are some of the latest discovery that provide us with energy.

Economic driver and poverty reduction:

Various parts of the world particularly the developed and still struggling economies, you will discover that the main backbone of their economy is agriculture. And it provides the largest percentage of employment opportunities in such countries. In addition to direct farming, various people are involved in processing industries and other agriculture related industries. Agriculture has greatly helped in eradicating poverty through providing employment and above all food.  In many developing countries, their major export and chief foreign currency earner are agricultural produces.

Ecosystem:

Surprisingly, agriculture destroys and preserves the ecosystem. The level of destruction depends on the amount of activities taking place in a particular locality. The increasing population growth has led to greater demand for room for agriculture activities leading to an increase in the level at which forests and other vegetation are being cleared. Overgrazing plus deforestation have interfered with the ecosystem.
For instance, as we all know various grass species make up animal pastures. When animals over graze on a particular piece of land, the feed on the edible and leave behind the non-edible. It being that all the various grass species compete for the same nutrients, they can co-exist in the same ecosystem given that no species has an advantage over the other. But because of over grazing, the now-edible will stand out more advantageous than the edible grasses, thus causing them to die out thus changing the entire eco-system.

Destroying the atmosphere

:

Intensive modern agriculture involves use of production, large financial investments and labor. This modern farming has resulted into environmental pollution by by erosion, water poisoning through release of chemicals into the water table and release of agricultural chemical fumes into the atmosphere.
Additionally there has been an increase of green house gasses into the environment. These gases have greatly contributed to global warming, by depleting the ozone layer. So unless we practice sustainable agriculture, our atmosphere will be negatively impacted.
