Kenya Safaris and Tourist Arrivals Drop by 90 percent

The tourist arrivals in Kenya have dropped by 90 per cent as a result of the violence after the elections in Kenya. This makes it the hardest hit in the tourism industry of Kenya since independence. The earnings in the first quarter of the year are projected to fall from 21 billion to just 8.

Dr Ong’ong’a, C.E.O Kenya Tourism Board was addressing hoteliers, tour operators, Tourism ministry officials and tourism stakeholders at Reef Hotel in Mombasa when the Tourism Crisis Committee presented its findings on the impact of the post-election violence on the industry and the way forward.

The meeting was also attended by Ministry of Tourism permanent secretary Rebecca Nabutola and officials from the Foreign Affairs ministry representing the minister Moses Wetang’ula.

The Tourism Board’s chairman, Mr Jake Grieves-Cook, called for the development of marketing strategies that would result in a faster turnaround.

Kenya is one of the top safari destinations in Africa,the post election violence has made the tourists cancel their bookings and so much more. Currently, talks are being mediated by Kofi Annan.
