A new telephone company, Hits Telecom has recently started operating, in addition to the legendary three monopolistic MTN, Celtel and Uganda Telecom communication companies. Hits Telecom is a partner to local Veritus communications.
The Saudi-based company also operates in Yemen and has been licensed in DR Congo and Nigeria.
Edwin Rodwell, the company’s Chief Executive said there is need to increase the network capacity in Uganda to meet the demands of the existing and potential subscribers.
To this effect, the operation will start hitherto the Commonwealth summit (CHOGM) in the month of November, this year.
Rodwell emphasized that the company will introduce the most recent technology which will be connected to the national fibre network currently under construction and the company would extend network coverage to distant rural areas.
“All over the world, the expansion of a number of operations and its associated competition drives down tariffs and improves service for the customers.Uganda will not be an exception to this principle,†said Rodwell.
Hits would invest about $150m this year and $50m expected early next year and estimate a direct labour force of 600 people, out of which 90% will be Ugandans.
This will provide employment opportunities for nationals as well as improve communication in the country.
