Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is seeing rapid growth in the number of people visiting, since it opened to visitors six months ago.
“The number of visitors is growing each month, and the reactions are enthusiastic,†Rhino Fund Executive Director Yvonne Verkaik, recently told TU News Update.
“To those of you that have taken their guests to us, we would like to ask to send us any comments, ideas or recommendations you have. Tracking rhinos is a completely new activity in Uganda and we are very eager to hear your experiences,†she says.
Midway between Kampala and the northern circuit, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a perfect stopover on the way to or from the Murchison. One take it in as a lunch stop (requires a days notice), or arrange to camp for a weekend.
Camping is possible, although facilities are still minimal (toilets and water are available at the Visitor Centre) but for those that bring their own equipment and food camping is allowed anywhere within the sanctuary.
Day trips from Kampala inclusive of transport, lunch and ranger-guide for rhino tracking – are going at $65 per person, EA residents pay$55 while Ugandan citizens are charged $50. Tour company staff and vehicles enter free.
Construction of tourist accommodation and camping facilities is planned for later this year.
Yvonne says these visits are important as they help run the project that is working to return rhinos to Uganda’s National Parks.
