UGANDA TO HOST COMMONWEALTH SUMMIT.

Uganda is to host the 2007 summit, a decision made by the 53-member Commonwealth resolved at the end of a three-day summit in Malta on 27th November.

Heads of Government resolved to meet in Kampala in 2007 at the invitation of the Government of Uganda.

Hosting of the 2009 summit to Trinidad and Tobago was also a decision taken by the commonwealth members. There was reaffirming of the Commonwealth’s pledge to international peace and security, condemning terrorism, liability and economic development, gender equality, good arbitration, respect for human rights, freedom of declaration and a political culture of clarity by the commonwealth members.

President Yoweri Museveni explained issues in Uganda about the arrest Besigye and insinuated enthusiasm of the government to handle them according to the law.
The arrest of the opposition leader Col.Besigye and placing a ban on demonstrations and debate on the case,
had cast doubt over whether Uganda was an appropriate venue for the meeting of a grouping that seeks to promote good governance and democracy.

President Museveni warmly expressed Uganda’s appreciation for being endorsed for the 2007 CHOGM and described Uganda as a beautiful country with good people, climate and food.
