Uganda motocross team dominated the United Assurance East Africa Challenge motocross held at Garuga taking the top five places in the open class (250cc plus) on Sunday with Frank Verhoestraete (Yamaha 450cc) emerging the winner with 60 points.
Pierre Honnorat came second with 51 while Ali Nsubuga was dethroned as the East Africa champion after coming third with 43 points. Barrak Orland (39) and Ian Bailey (29) completed Uganda’s domination finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
United Assurance (UA) was the main sponsor. Fresh Cuts, Blue Sky International, Nalubale Rafting, AON Insurance, Total Uganda Ltd and Hotel Regency International were co-sponsor.
Moses Mugo (28) was the highest placed Kenyan in the open class finishing sixth with 28 points.
125cc class, Kenya’s Shirvan Vinyak emerged the winner with 60 points but Uganda took the next five places.
In the 65cc, Adil Khan of Kenya emerged the winner with 50 points followed by the only girl in the championship Natalie Van Pee of Uganda with 47 points and Mattis Honnorat of Uganda, former champion at 50cc class was third with 40 points. A fairly large crowd braved the heavy down pour and was entertained by the riders. The second leg of championship will be held on November 26, 2006 in Kenya.
It was a similar story in 85cc class with Karen Patel of Kenya taking the honours with 60 points and Uganda claiming most three of the next four places.
