British/New Zealand Expedition team Ascend the Nile, last month completed their epic re-exploration of the river Nile, claiming a new record that is has re-ignited the old debate about the rivers true source.
The team began its upstream journey at the river’s mouth on the Mediterranean coast, travelling more than 6,700km in three, tiny 4m boats during their 80-day Odyssey.Besides the extensive sudds of Southern Sudan, the team braved heavy populations of crocodile and more than 60 rapids on the Uganda section of the river.
The team is claiming a number of firsts: the first and longest journey in the 4m inflatable boats known as Zap Cats and the first to re-measure the entire length of the Nile. The Ascend the Nile team now believe it to be at least 107 km longer than previously thought. They also claim to be the first non-inhabitants to travel through and map the Sudd, a vast swamp in southern Sudan.
