Dr George Bigirwa, a Ugandan scientist, Plant Pathologist and Head of the Cereals Research Programme at the Namulonge Agricultural and Animal Production Research Institute (NAARI)Â has won an award for being Africa’s best paper presenter on rice.
This was at a recent Africa Rice Congress in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Bigirwa presented a paper on the performance of Upland NERICAs in Uganda and beat over 300 African scientists who also presented papers concerning rice in Africa. The paper was based on the performance of the NERICAs in Uganda. Both the Lowland and Upland NERICAs (New Rice for Africa) are a across breed of African Rice with Asian rice.
