MTN MARATHON RACE FOR INTERNATIONAL STANDARD.

MTN Kampala International Marathon took place on Sunday November 20th with over 1000 participants from different countries.
The race aimed at raising funds for supporting more 5000 expectant mothers living in internally displaced peoples (IDP) Camps of Northern Uganda.

Margaret Nakintu last year’s winner set a new national record at 2:48:18hrs,winning the marathon.
Kenyan athletes dominated the men’s MTN Kampala Marathon as 2,271 runners from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya and host Uganda took to the streets in yellow.

Laban Moiben, Isaac Kosgei and Dominic Lagat took the top three positions and shared out the sh9.4m top prize in the MTN- sponsored event. Francis Yiga the best Ugandan runner was in fifth position behind four Kenyans. Yiga finished the race at 2:18:47 last year.

UAF president Dan Tamwesigire Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) suggested that the marathon be put on the international calendar with an aim of making the race more international, involving more participants and continue with raising more funds for the disadvantaged. This was at a dinner to celebrate UAF’s 80th anniversary at Sheraton Hotel.

MTN Uganda in association with official partners like Coca-Cola Company, Uganda amateur athletics association, Uganda Red Cross, Saracen Uganda limited, DHL, True African, and capital radio organized the event to raise 202.75 million Uganda shillings for funds through participation in the fundraising events.
