Mountain Gorillas still Safe after invasion in Congo
The war activity going on in the Virunga National Park has put gorillas safety to a hold and the conservation strategy remains uncertain and gorilla safaris in Congo as well.
About 300 of the only remaining mountain gorillas in the world stay in this rather unsafe war zone congo in the virunga national park.
But even after the invasion of the area by the rebels, the habituated gorillas in virunga national park are doing well. 73 silverbacks, 7 blackbacks, 17 adult females, 5 sub adult males, 15 juveniles and 13 babies.
Wundi said, “Without ranger patrols at the Jomba and Bikenge patrol posts it is a worrying time for the gorillas but for the moment it remains quiet and we continue to be positive that the gorillas will be safe. We are monitoring the situation and doing all we can to ensure that peace returns to the gorilla sector.”
Since the beginning of the year, 9 mountain gorillas have been killed but the uncertainity of who kills then and why remains a mystery in the hearts of very many conservationists.
