Upland rice millers have established a sh200m rice milling factory in Jinja, revealed the shift manager, Alfred Aisu.
The factory has been setup on similar standards to those of mills in Pakistan, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. The aim of the new factory is process rice for both local and international markets.
“The experts came here for two months to fit the machine and also gave us intensive training on how to operate professionally, “said Aisu.
He added that the mil can produce over 6,000 tones and that traders who bring un-milled rice can get a better price from the factory’s milled rice.
Since Uganda’s rice is fresh and not stored for many years it is far better than imported rice.
The stores manager, Balam Ojuk said that,†traders who mill with us can sell to schools. We can make a special arrangement for traders to make quick sales.
They can also sell their un-milled rice to us.â€
Ojuk added that, the factory is aiming at giving an opportunity to small traders to grow by delivering the rice to the factory for milling rather than the millers going to buy form them. This is expected to yield more money for the local traders.
