The Government is to spend over $7.8m (about sh14b)to construct and rehabilitate roads in the north and north eastern parts of the country.
Briefing Members of Parliament (MPs) on the proposed borrowing for the project’s first phase, the finance minister Dr. Ezra Suruma, said $7m would be borrowed from the Arab Bank for Economy Development in Africa (ABEDA) and $0.8m, would be met by the Government.
The project is under the 10-year road sector development programme being implemented by the works ministry. The project is a realisation and appreciation of the role that the stock of brides play in the national and district road network.
Suruma (right), said ABEDA had agreed to finance the upgrading of 44km stretch of Kafu-Masindi road to bituminous standard and fund the construction and rehabilitation of 21 road bridges in northern Uganda. Fourteen of the bridges are in Arua and seven in Nebbi.
Suruma said the project would help in eradicating poverty.
This is meant to support the economic and social recovery programmes taking place in the country, through the removal of transportation bottlenecks to economic, poverty eradication and market integration, the minister said.
