Namibia Safari, Top Attractions 2009

 Visit Etosha national park for Namibia Safaris, Tours and adventure vacations in African Safari.

Day 1 – Sesriem, 2 nights lodge accommodation
Depart Windhoek and traverse the Khomas Hochland highlands. Stop for lunch at Spreetshoogte Pass, which has one of the most stunning views in Namibia, before descending to the Namib Desert. Stop at Solitaire for refreshments and then proceed to the lodge for dinner and overnight. Travel time to day is 5 hours (350kms) and your accommodation has en suite facilities. Lunch and Dinner

Day 2 – Discover Sesriem & Sossusvlei
Depart early in the morning to drive to the entrance of the dune fields, and then on to Sossusvlei and some of the world’s highest sand dunes. As the sun rises, the changing colours and shadows of the dunes are truly spectacular. Spend the morning with a specialist guide, learning a little about the flora and fauna that survive in this harsh environment. Enjoy breakfast and lunch out in the dunes and then return, via Sesriem Gorge, to the lodge. There is time to relax by the pool before dinner. Drive time today will be about 3 hours (260kms).

Day 3 & 4 – Swakopmund, 2 nights hotel/pension
Today’s drive is through the gravel plains of the Namib Naukluft, via the Kuiseb Canyon and up to Walvis Bay where you visit the lagoons to observe the flamingos. After a 6 hour drive covering about 280kms you arrive into Swakopmund in the late afternoon. Stay 2 nights in a small and very atmospheric hotel or pension with en suite facilities. Dinner will be at one of the many good restaurants in this popular resort. (The seafood is particularly good.)

There are many optional activities available in Swakopmund, from dune-boarding, quad-biking, to light-aircraft flights over the Namib and along the Skeleton Coast. Your guide can also take us on a trip out to see the famous Welwitchia plants and the Moon Landscape. Dinner is again taken in town.

Day 5 – Twyfelfontein, 1 night lodge
Today head north along the Skeleton Coast to Henties Bay, and on to the Cape Cross Reserve, where thousands of seals live and breed. Then it is inland to Damaraland to see the Brandberg- Namibia’s highest peak. Damaraland is home to desert elephant, often seen along the dry river-beds. After 6 hours on the road (300kms) overnight at a lodge near Twyfelfontein, again you will have an en suite bathroom.

Day 6 & 7 – Kaokoland, 2 nights lodge
Leave early for Kaokoland and en route visit the ancient site of Twyfelfontein to see the ancient rock engravings. Continue north through very picturesque country via Khorixas to the farming community of Kamanjab, where you stop for lunch at an Ova-Himba project. In the afternoon learn a little of the lives of these fascinating people and then head to a private lodge (with en suite facilities) for a 2 night stop. Travel time today will be about 6 hours (440 km).

Day 7 is a day of relaxation, take advantage of the lodge facilities; there are some good local walks for those so inclined and a hide overlooking the waterhole for those wishing to look for game. An optional night drive is recommended to complete the day.

Day 8 & 9 – Etosha National Park, Okaukuejo Rest Camp 2 nights
Leaving the lodge drive through stunning landscapes to Etosha National Park and game drive through the western half of the Park, a restricted area for use by Registered Tour Operators only. Arrive at Okaukuejo Rest Camp during the afternoon, in time to relax by the pool. Tonight your guide prepares dinner over an open fire: a great bush experience. The waterhole at the camp is floodlit and famous for its sightings of black rhino. Drive time today will be about 5 hours over 120 kms – slow to allow for game viewing. At the Rest Camp accommodation is in 2 roomed chalets with shared bathroom facilities.

Day 9 is spent game viewing – Etosha has an enormous Pan, a shallow, salty depression which once may have been a lake-bed, but now only fills with shallow water in exceptionally wet years. Around its perimeter, numerous waterholes attract great concentrations of wildlife. Return to relax during the heat of the day before an afternoon game drive. Dinner is at the restaurant in the camp.

Day 10 – Namutoni area of Etosha, Game Farm, 1 night
Drive to the eastern side of Etosha game viewing en route. Lunch will be at Halali Rest Camp in the centre of the Park and you should reach the eastern borders of Etosha by late afternoon. Overnight at a game ranch on the border of Etosha, accommodation has en suite facilities. The distance traveled over the course of the day will be about 120kms.

Day 11 – Otavi Mountains, Ghaub Lodge, 2 nights

After a relaxing morning leave the game ranch and take a short drive to the Ombili Bushman Project to can learn something about the lives of today’s San (Bushman) people. From here continue south into the Otavi Mountains, arrive by mid-afternoon in time to enjoy a walk before sunset. Drive time about 3 hours / covering about 250kms – your lodge accommodation has en suite bathroom facilities.

Day 12 – Safari ends in Windhoek
The drive down to Windhoek is on a good road and there is time to stop in Okahandja to visit the local wood-carving market. Arrive back in Windhoek for late afternoon flights or maybe a final night in town. Four hours drive / 350kms
