Botswana is one of the most expensive safari destinations in Africa. With the Credit Crunch going on, its easier to think of other destinations that Botswana. You can visit the Okavango Delta or other Botswana safari features at a cheaper price.

Days 1 & 2 – Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, 2 nights camping
Depart from Maun at 08h00 and head for the fascinating Makgadikgadi salt pans for two nights camping in the Khumaga area.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park includes a portion of the 12000 sq km (4600 sq mile) Makgadikgadi Pans, which are the size of Portugal. Once these pans were one of the world’s largest prehistoric lakes, they dried up only 10,000 years ago due to continual shifting of the earth’s crust and formed today’s salt plains, covered with grasslands and isolated “islands” of vegetation, baobab and palm trees.

Days 3 & 4 – Central Kalahari Game Reserve, 2 nights camping Safari Holiday Botswana

The safari moves camp to an ancient riverbed that meanders between wooded dunes across the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The riverbed supports a great diversity of fauna and flora, and you may explore this fragile ecosystem along a great length of its course.

Numbers of oryx are found grazing along the way, and you could also encounter lion, leopard, brown hyena, giraffe, wildebeest, hartebeest, jackal, bat-eared fox and various other species in this intriguing environment. Raptors such as black-shouldered kites, kestrels and eagles abound while marsh owls are often seen after the rains. Around an evening campfire discuss the land, the people and the flora and fauna.

Day 5 – Deception Valley Lodge, 1 night Botswana Wildlife Safari
A night in a lodge – Deception Valley Lodge adds to the overall experience. A highlight of the stay will be a night game drive and as this takes place on the edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve there is a very good chance of encountering some fascinating nocturnal wildlife.

Days 6 & 7 – Okavango Delta, 2 nights camping Okavango Safaris, Okavango Tours
Another highlight of your lodge stay is an early morning walk led by a San tracker who shares his peoples’ knowledge of the land and its inhabitants.

The safari then returns to Maun by road for a scenic flight into the Okavango Delta where two nights are spent camping on a private concession. Explore the Okavango by mokoro (canoe), by powerboat and on foot. Depending on game concentrations, you could expect to find lechwe, kudu, buffalo, reedbuck and many other species. The flora, too, provides a fascinating glimpse into the intricate ecology of the Delta. During the hot hours of the day there is the opportunity to swim in the clear waters.

Days 8 & 9 – Moremi Wildlife Reserve, 2 nights camping Botswana Tour
Continue by light aircraft to Khwai, gateway to the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. Here the days are spent enjoying extensive game-drives The Moremi Wildlife Reserve on the northeastern edge of the Okavango Delta packs acacia forests, wetlands, lagoons and swamps into 1,800 sq km (700 sq miles). As varied as the terrain is, so is the game. From lion and leopard to elephant and buffalo right down to the bird-life, even the least inspired ornithologists will be amazed.

Days 10 to 13 – Chobe National Park, 4 nights camping Chobe Safari Tours Botswana

ravel to Savute – excellent for lion and other predator viewing – where you will spend two nights camping next to the dry Savute Channel. Depending on the time of year, great concentrations of wildlife are attracted to this area.

From Savute, continue to northern Chobe where you will camp in the Serondela area of the Park. This is the heart of elephant country and you will have the opportunity to spend many hours watching the huge herds in and around the waters of the Chobe River. Days 14 – Victoria Falls, Hotel accommodation, 1 night Luxury safari Botswana
It is a short drive from Chobe to Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights.
Now is the time to wash off the dust of Botswana and relax over a cold beer, and enjoy luxury surrounds at Matetsi Water Lodge, located in a private game sanctuary on the banks of the Zambezi River.

The Victoria Falls or Mosi oa Tunya – “the Smoke that Thunders”, are truly a magnificent sight for here the mighty Zambezi River encounters a narrow gorge and falls 100 metres in a shower of drenching spray and deafening noise. The Victoria Falls rise and fall considerably with changes in the Zambezi River level, so visits at different times of the year can be dramatically different. In a normal year, the peak is around March/April and the trough in August/September.
