AIRLINE SAFETY
Q Where is the safest place to sit on an airplane?
The truth is , there is no safest seat on a plane . In a plane crash
or accident, the seriousness of the injuries depends on many factors
,some of which may not apparent until an accident occurs . For instance
, there have been many accidents involving heavy smoke or or fire
where survival depended on the ability of passengers not to quickly
remove them selves and others from the aircraft after landing.
Q Where is the safest airline to fly ?
Clearly there are some airlines which have not had a passenger die
in an accident and others which have had several fatal accidents
. However , that does not make one airline automatically safer than
the other . The most important indicator of the overall safety of
the airline is how its nation 's civil aviation authority regulates
it.
If an airline is notorious for poor time keeping , lots of passenger
complaints like over booking , and severe financial problems , then
parhaps it is time to find an alternative airline.
Q Which aircraft model is latest ?
All air crafts in a particular model have to adhere to
the same set of standards . When safety concerns arise because of
one or moeraccidents associated with a particular model , the civil
aviation authority ties of the major industrialized countries will
usually require that the issue be addressed in all relevant air
craft models. For instance fatal airline accident due to wind shear
in the 70s and 80s in the United states , led to a number of innovations
in aircraft and ground wind shear detection system s . This led
to reduction in the risk of accidents due to that weather phenomenon.
Q What kind of emergency am i most likely to face ?
For every accident , there are dozens , even hundreds of
unusual circumstances that can happen during a flight. For a passenger
, the most likely emergencies that will face where you will have
to do some thing is an evacuation of the aircraft using the emergency
slides or using the emergency slides using the emergency oxygen
system.
Q Who investigates airline accidents ?
In most cases formal airline accidents investigations are the responsibility
of either the nation where the aircrafts was registered. The airline
operating the accident aircraft ,the aircraft manufacturer, and
the engine manufacturer may also get involved.
Q Is flying getting less safe today
In the last fifteen years or so, the fatal accident rate
for passenger aircrafts has not significantly changed .What has
changed is the number of flights performed around the world ,more
than doubling during that same time .While the rate has not changed
that much , the increase in flights means that the number of fatal
accidents has been on rise . If one measures safety by accident
rate , things have not changed much.
General Airport Security Guidelines
Carry -on Baggage- Air traveler are limited to one carry
- on bag and one personal item (such as a purse or brief case) on
all frights .
Allow extra time - the heightened measures require
more time to properly screen travelers . Travelers should contact
their airline to find out how early should arrive at airport.
Screen Check -Only tickets passengers are allowed
beyond the screener check points ,except for those with specific
medical or parental needs. All electronic item ,such as laptops
and cell phones , may be subjected to additional screening . Be
prepared to remove your laptop from its travel case so that both
can be x -rayed separately.
limit the amount of jewelry or other metals that you wear .
Traveler should remove all metal objects that you wear . Travelers
should remove all metal objects prior to passing through the metal
object prior to passing through the metal detectors in order to
facilitate the screening process.
Extra time - During the busy period , or when travel with children
, elderly or disabled people you are traveling with.
Don't leave
your car unattended in front of the terminal -Air parking
rules are strictly enforced and your car be quickly fined and towed
.
Beware of unattended packages - If you see an unattended
package or bag in the terminal , report it to the air port security
staff or other authority.
Know what you are carrying - Watch your bags while
you are at the airport and dont accept packages from strangers .
Be prepared to answer questions about who packed your bags and whether
you might have left them unattended at any time . Think carefully
and answer honestly .History has shown that criminals and terrorists
use uniting passengers to carry bombs or other dangerous item on
board , either by tricking passengers into carrying packages or
by simply slipping items into unwatched bags . If you have any doubt
say so.
SAFETY IN THE AIR
Causes of plane crashes
Your chances of dying in a plane crash are about 11 million . On
the other hand
, your chances of being killed in a car accident are one in a 5000.
Statistically you are at a greater risk driving to the office than
getting on an airplane . However the perception is that you have
more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger.
Research shows otherwise . Studies have shown one would have to
fly once a day for over 15000 years in order to statically be involved
in an a plane crash ! There are various reasons a plane crash may
occur . Below are just a few of them .
Pilot Errors - Pilots are responsible for transporting
the plane 's passengers from one destination to another . When a
crash occurs because of a pilot error ,it may involve misuse of
air craft ,controls or landing gear , misjudgment of the aircraft
altitude , failure to observe weather warning before flight ,or
traveling at an unreasonably high airspeed.
Faulty / poorly maintained Equipment - Specialists
are studying wear on the assemblies , which control the movement
of the horizontal stabilizer on an air craft 's tail.It was such
a worn stabilizer that caused a crash of Alaska Airways flight 261
. The crew had reported problems with the stabilizer and were trying
to correct them when the plane crashed off the Califonia coast on
January 31, 2000 , killing all 88 abroad .
Violating Aviation regulation - Aviation laws exist
to protect every one using air travel. Violations of these regulations's
can endanger the safety of every in the air .
Air craft fueling negligence or fuel tank Explosions-
A fuel tank explosion was the cause if the T W A flight 800 ( boeing
747) crash on july 17 , 1996 in the water off long Island , New
york .
After four years of investing the crash , it was concluded that
the probable cause of the crash was an explosion in the aged air
crafts fuel tank .
-Weather including turbulence- Turbulence happens
and much of it is un predicted .
-Structural or design problems with an air craft
-Civil aviation authority air traffic controllers' negligence
- Engine failures
-Runway incursions
-Who is to blame when a plane crashes ?- Unlike
other types of accidents , unique negligence laws govern plane crashes
.These laws include country and often international laws Depending
on the cause of the crash , various parties could be held liable.
This includes the manufacturer of the plane as well as the manufacturers
of the various components that make up the plane.
