Uganda Recreation &Entertainment
Entertainment varies from the sublime to the ridiculuous.In
Kampala and other towns of Uganda, Discos are very much the order
of the day, Ange noir and Club Silk being
the leading dance halls.Some of the disco clubs present every day
while others have particular days .
Their music usually varies from night to night in style that is
; House Reggae ,Caribbean,Western music one night and African
the other .It is extremely loud all nights and no Hotels in the
city centre are immune.You there fore have to learn to dance or
move out.
Occasionally, the manager of the lodge will provide
the necessary entertainment available be it African cultural dances
and usually Karaoke based on any type of music.
There is Kampala casino , Casino
international at Hotel international (Tank hill) and many others
that are suitable for those in interested in gambling with areas
bar and Restaurant to keep you moving.
Canoe Regatta at Munyonyo is another recreation activity that started
in1986 by the Baganda royalists under King Daudi Chwa who got together
and organised this race to mark the centenary of the Uganda Martyrs.
This event was repeated in the presence of King Ronnie Mutebi who
was by then a prince .Since then it has become an annual event.
There are foods and drinks. Men are usually dressed in Kanzus ,
and women in brightly colored Busutis displaying their culture
with hats that show which clans they support in the race.
For shopping You do need to know first what you are
looking for before you look for i's shopping centre.The city centre
has got a wide range of shops , super
markets like Shop rite and may more.Some lodges outside Kampala
have got craft shops.The best option however is the African Crafts
village where you will find a range of African crafts whish is behind
the national theatre.
For sports , usually nature walks are organized by
various travel agents to various mountains like
Mt .Elgon, Mt.
Rwenzori, Mt Mgahinga
and many other mountains .Walks are organized and many more .
There is a Golf course located opposite the Fairway
Hotel with a pleasant bar and patio Cafe
Sailing and boating is also a recreation activity
around all water bodies of Uganda like on Lake Victoria not leaving
out white water Rafting on the Nile.
For Tennis courts,there is one at Luggogo on Jinja
rd , another one at Sheraton in the city centre and another one
at the American Recreation Association,Makindye Road .
If it night ,you are looking for Kampala will not
disappoint you! There are a large number of places offering entertainment
most of which are found around hotels .
In addition to pubs , restaurants and night club , the national
theatres is open every day , and busiest over weekends.
Drama groups presents plays in both locals and international languages,
other theatres include Pride, River side , Holly wood and Bat Valley.
For musical entertainment visitors can listen to live bands and
discos including the famous Afrigo Band which plays at
House of entertainment adjacent Crested towers on Friday and Saturdays,
whilst other bands like simba sounds play at Equatoria
Hotel and Ndere Troupe perform at the Nile Gardens Hotel
in the city centre , and other venues out of town .The Sheraton
Hotel's Rhinos always has rappelling bands from other countries,
and they change these 'gigs' every few months .
Discotheques include Club silk and Ange Noir, in the industrial
area, just 2 or 3 kms out of the city centre and the vipre room
in Hotel Equatoria.Club Silk has a Mzungu night with Western
Music on is the Ugandan word for European / White.)
There are a number of pubs / clubs thats have regular Karaoke
evenings.Other popular sports bars are: Just Kicking in the Kisement,Kaos
on Kitante Road ,Capital pub in Kabalagala and Rock Garden next
door to speke Hotel. Dont miss a visit to the legendary Al's bar
on Ggaba Road ,(as long as you dont mind being a little pestered
by the' ladies of the night').For a roof - top pub with a different,
try Wagadugu in sturrock Road , Kololo
Kampala has got a casino in the Kimathi Avenue, with in a walking
distance to most hotels , open from 2 pm 'till late cineplex on
wilson Road in the city centre , is Kampala's main Cinema showing
recent films . It has two screens with Dolby syrround sound and
air -conditioning.
For some thing different, a visit to the outdoor market during the
day or in the evening near Nakivubo and around the Taxi Park and
other Trading Centres is a must.
