of CHOGM and Background
COMMONWEALTH HEADS OF GOVERNMENT MEETING (CHOGM)
Every two years Commonwealth Heads of Government meet to consult,
share experiences and deliberate on issues of pan-commonwealth and
international significance. The next meeting (CHOGM) will be held
in Kampala in the month of November. The actual dates and the theme
for the CHOGM 2007 in Kampala are due to be announced jointly by
His Excellency the President of Uganda and t6he Secretary-General
of the Commonwealth within the month of December 2006. CHOGM is
the main forum for consultation among member states of Commonwealth
of Nations, referred to as Commo0nwealth. Once every two years,
the Heads of Government of the 53 member countries of the Commonwealth
meet, in a member state, to discuss a range of issues such as Health,
Education, Finance, Development, Law, Youth Affairs, etc.
In December 2003 in Abuja Nigeria, the Heads of Government decided
that Uganda would host CHOGM. This decision was reaffirmed in Malta
CHOGM 2005.
In the past two and a half decades, CHOGM has been held in: Australia,2001;
South Africa,1999; United Kingdom,1997; New Zealand,1995; Cyprus,1993;
Zimbabwe,1991: Malaysia,1989; Canada,1987; Bahamas,1985; India,1983;
Australia,1981; Zambia,1979.
