Botswana Wildlife Safari, Wildlife Tour Botswana Africa

Day 1 – Botswana, Chobe National Park, 1 night camping Botswana Safaris
Leaving Livingstone Zambia, cross via the Kazungula ferry into Botswana and set up camp in Kasane, on the edge of the Chobe National Park. This afternoon there is an optional cruise on the Chobe River for your first chance of game viewing. The Chobe River runs along the northern border of Chobe National Park. It rises in the northern Angolan highlands and travels enormous distances through Kalahari sands before reaching Botswana where it is known as the Linyanti and then the Chobe.

Dinner

Day 2 – Botswana, Maun, 1 night camping Chobe Safari Tours Botswana
Early morning 4x4 game drive inside Chobe National Park - situated in the northeast of Botswana, Chobe is 11,000 sq km (4,500 sq miles) and combines river flood plains with open pans and riverine woodlands. The best time to visit is from May to September when you will be thrilled by the huge herds of elephant and buffalo that have made the park famous. In addition there are big numbers of hippopotamus, giraffe, kudu and impala and more than 250 species of birds have been recorded. Be warned however, at the wrong time of the year even 25,000 elephant can disappear into a park this size. It is still very beautiful, very quiet and we did see aardwolf for the first time … but in December, not an elephant was to be found in three days of looking!

After a late breakfast depart for Maun, the gateway to the Delta, to camp overnight and prepare for the Delta excursion tomorrow. Optional visit to a nearby Crocodile Farm.
Breakfast & dinner

Day 3 & 4 – Botswana, Okavango Delta, 2 nights camping Okavango Safaris, Okavango Tours
Morning departure into one of Africa’s most unspoilt wilderness areas, the journey begins with a 4 x 4 drive into the Okavango Delta where the group is joined by local guides who pole the mokoros (dug-out canoes). Enjoy game viewing as you glide silently through the channels, stop to take game walks and enjoy picnic lunches. In the evening set up camp on a remote island in the heart of the Delta and after a breathtaking sunset, relax around the campfire listening to the magical sounds of the night.

Rivers flow to the ocean - not so the Okavango, which originates in Angola and spills back inland to the sands of the Kalahari Desert where it fans out and forms a vast delta of wetlands and waterways. At the flood, the water swells to cover an area of more than 16,000 sq km (6,000 sq miles), quite literally a land of water; lagoons dotted with lilies, narrow channels that are invaded by papyrus reeds, islands and shallow sheets of water that glisten in the sun. Naturally this bounty attracts a huge variety of mammals and bird species, though on occasion they are almost secondary to the sheer wonder of the setting.

SAFARI STYLE

PARTICIPATION
Get involved on this trip – full participation is expected and adds to the fun. You make the safari happen so put up your own tent, do the dishes, and help with the cooking & keeping the vehicle clean.

SAFARI CREW
The crew are energetic & specially trained to ensure you get the most out of your trip. Working in Africa is unlike elsewhere in the world – your guide has to expect the unexpected. Resourcefulness, practical knowledge and experience of the African continent are what it’s all about!

SMALL & PERSONALISED GROUPS
The maximum group size is 10 passengers and this small group size contributes greatly to conservation, as fewer people in an area means less damage and easy litter control. Think of this safari as travelling with a party of friends rather than a huge group of passengers.

SAFARI VEHICLE FEATURES
This safari is operated in a minibus allowing for quicker travel and the efficiency of a small group. The minibus ensures easy access into remote areas - after all, minibuses are the most common form of transport in Africa these days. Where a 4 x 4 is needed we use local operators. A fitted trailer carries luggage and equipment.

CAMPING GEAR PROVIDED Botswana Hotels
Two person dome tents, thin sleeping mat, all cooking equipment & utensils plus camping stools are provided. Sleeping bags are not included but can be hired, please advise in advance.

LUGGAGE
Luggage is limited to one soft bag per person + 1 camera bag / day-pack and a sleeping bag.
NO SUITCASES PLEASE. We can arrange luggage storage in Johannesburg.

SLEEPING BAG/ BLANKET

PERSONAL EFFECTS
Travel light with light, casual clothing for the day and a fleecy/jersey or tracksuit for the evenings. Take a good pair of walking/ tennis shoes. Bring a torch, water bottle, swimsuit, hat, sunscreen, binoculars, camera and spare film. Allow enough money for souvenirs, evenings out, drinks & special excursions. On receipt of your deposit we will send you with a comprehensive list of what to bring.

CAMP CUISINE & DRINKS
Most of the meals are included. If a meal is not included you stop at suitable places where good food is available at a fair price. Eating out allows more time for the highlights and you get another local African experience. Every effort is made to cater for special dietary requirements, however due to local supplies this can be tricky, if you have a special diet you will be expected to help the crew with your meals. And you must let us know in advance.

AFRICAN CONDITIONS
Travelling in Africa is sometimes unpredictable and at times the itinerary will change to take local conditions into account. Unforeseen circumstances due to problems with road conditions, weather, mechanical breakdown etc can delay & change the performance of the safari. Please come prepared and be prepared to be a little flexible.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
Travel insurance is not included. You are responsible for arranging your own insurance. We can arrange insurance for travellers from the UK and Australia.
