ENTEBBE
SEWAGE POND
The sewage treatment pond is an excellent spot for
waders and well worth a visit during the migration period. Take
the road from Entebbe towards the international airport and turn
right 1.3km past the memorial (which is 200m past the white clock
tower). Follow the track and turn right again onto the small dirt
road after the second house and follow it all the way to the end.
Due in part to their accessibility, the areas around Entebbe have
received much attention from resident and visiting ornithologists
over the years and now boast a long list of rarities. Greater sand
plover, Great Black- headed Gull and Tawny Pipit are all known from
Uganda on the basis of single records from the Entebbe airport,
whilst Little ringed plover, common Tern, European turtle dove,
Eurasian Nightjar and Eurasian Wryneck are other rarities recorded
from the Entebbe area. The recently recognized heuglin’s gull
(formerly considered a race of herring gull) is a regular vagrant
and there are numerous recent sight records of slender –billed
gull from the wetlands near the airport.
Please note that on your birding trip, you may need birding binoculars, an othinology book for better indentification of Uganda birds. We also encourage you to participate in efforts that encourage avian conservation of Uganda tourism.
