The fishing industry in Uganda

Back in time, when the earth was very young with a small number of inhabitants, fish was hunter only for their personal consumption. If anyone desired fish, all they would do was go to the waters and get the fish. This was very easy as most inhabitants had settled close to the water bodies. As time kept on changing, so did the fishing techniques. Today people living away from the water sources no longer have to travel long distances to go fishing instead, go to their local markets.
The growing human population resulted into an increased demand for fish and other sea food; and since then the fishing industry has evolved along with fish harvesting, processing, preserving, culturing, storage and transportation processes. Today, there is a wide variety of fish species always available on the market for human consumption
The three primary sectors in the fishing Industry are: traditional, commercial and recreational. The commercial sector is actually the largest and most prevalent among the three and it is comprised of various processing chains among which are:
Fish can be harvested or collected through fish farming or commercial fishing. In the year 2005, 157.5 million tones which is approximated to 24.4 Kg for every average individual on earth was the total of fish harvested in the world from both aquaculture and sea capture. The fishing industry fortunately harvests a variety of fishes, mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic plants among others. Under the commercial fishing industry, the top producing countries include China, Japan, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Peru, US, Russia and Indonesia. Surprisingly, the overwhelming global demand for fish has depleted reserves in some water bodies and endangered some fish species making them vulnerable to extinction.
Aquaculture can be defined as the type of farming that involves growing of aquatic organisms in well controlled conditions. Mari-culture involves the same process but under marine environment whereas Agraculture involves the production of sea-weed or kelp plus other algae. Cultivating of cultured pearls and shrimp farming are the other categories of aquaculture. To meet the increasing demand fo the highly proteinous fish, farming of fish in large tanks and enclosed containers is an alternative commercial fishing type.
Fish processing results into production of fish products. The various types of fishes delivered from the  different commercial fisheries together with the fish farms are all sorted during the processing stage. The fish products are sold out at wholesale to grocery-stores or other intermediaries. Fish handling is a sub-process under the fish processing stage which involves filleting together with freezing of the raw fish before it is distributed out. What follows is manufacturing of the different fish products. All these processes can be done at fish processing plants, fishing vessels or on fish processing vessels. Not only are sea products gathered to be consumed as food, some of the Chinese traditional medicine comprise of ingredients collected from star fish, sea cucumbers and sea horses. When clarifying beer or wine, isinglass is used.
Fish marketing involves the selling of fish and other sea produces in the various market places, supermarkets and wet markets. This can be in wholesale between the fishermen and the different merchants or in retail to individual consumers. Additionally is a live fish-food trade which joins together various fishing communities from the different markets.
